日本ペンクラブ本部のこの建築は日本ベンクラブが開催した指名コンベで選ばれ、設計しました。都心の角張ったビルが所狭しと立ち並ぶビジネス街の只中にありながら、三辺が道路に、残る一辺が稲荷神社に面した敷地に、建築の自律性を主題として構想されました。中心を少しずつずらしながら連続する変形楕円の平面外形は、1階がビロティ状に開放されながら、筒状に立ち上がり、単純な幾何学形態を避けることで、手作り土器のような素朴さを求めました。曲面を描く外観は瓦タイルで覆われ、独特の燻した銀黒色は「和」の文化を想起させます。やわらかな曲面をもつ形態は、周辺環境にゆとりと潤いを与えています。内部は一転して白漆喰を基調とし、寡黙で安らぎのある空間演出を心掛けました。ただ一点に焦点が集まることのない変形楕円の平面は、ここで繰り広げられる数々の議論が、自由を尊重し固有性と多様性を大切にしていくことを願ってデザインされました。

Our proposal was selected in the invited design competition for the Headquarters of Japanese Centre of International P.E.N. Our project proposed the autonomy of architecture on the site surrounded by three public roads and Inari shrine among the geometry of business quarter at central Tokyo. We explored natural design such as handmade earthenware: in stead of simple geometry, distorted oval plans are vertically accumulated with slightly dislocated center positions at each level, which results in the tube-like volume with pilotis at the ground floor. The unique smoky-black kawara tiles of gently curved surface evoke the Japanese culture and provide a sense of comfort and freshness. The interior space is, in contrast, based on white plaster for the concept of reticent and peaceful space. We designed the multi-focus distorted oval planning, expecting various discussions would provide liberties, identities and diversities.
