About AKA

Atsushi Kitagawara Architects was established in 1980 by Atsushi Kitagawara, and reorganized into a corporation in 1982 in order to start full-scale works for architecture. “Rise”, a cinema building completed in 1986 in Shibuya, was remarkable for its creative design and attracted many visitors not only from within the country but also from overseas.

We have participated in “Contemporary Japanese Architect Exhibition” at GA Gallery along with Tadao Ando and Toyoo Ito, every time held since 1988. Atsushi Kitagawara was also introduced with Kenzo Tange and Arata Isozaki in the complete books “Primary colors in Japanese Art” (Shogakukan). We and our works have been featured in the media such as Japan’s most well-known architecture magazine “Shinkenchiku” and published in foreign countries. A picture of our project decorated the cover of “ARCHITECTURAL RECORD” magazine in the United States. In 1992, a special feature edition for Atsushi Kitagawara was published by JAPAN ARCHITECT, an international edition of Shinkenchiku.

The project of urban-typed apartment “Metroca” was awarded the Newcomer Prize by Japan Institute of Architects in 1991. In the same year, we have been selected by the Designers Selection Committee of Tokyo to design a police station at Higashi-nihonbashi, jurisdiction of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. The project finally was awarded with the Tokyo Architectural Award.

In the 1990s, we started to carry out more urban planning and large-scale projects, such as “Aria” in Kofu City in Yamanashi Prefecture that includes the urban design for a seven hectares industrial area, landscape and architectural design of the headquarters, factories and community facilities for 13 companies (total floor area: 24,000㎡). We were highly evaluated for the fusion of their innovative urban design and the harmony of the natural environment. “Aria” was awarded with the Gold Medal of Good Design Award in 1995 and the Premium Award of Architectural Institute of Japan in 1997.

In addition, we won the first prize in the open design competition for “Fukushima international exhibition hall and convention center,<Big Palette Fukushima>” with a total floor area of 23,000 ㎡ and a site area of 5 hectares. As a result of design and construction supervision over four years, the project was highly evaluated for its dynamic design, technical innovation and functionality looking to the future. We received the Architectural Institute of Japan Prize in 2000. This “Big Palette Fukushima” has a reputation for its high facility utilization.

In 1997, the exhibition of three Japanese architects titled “Togo Murano, Fumihiko Maki, and Atsushi Kitagawara” was held at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts.

Since we have always had a strong interest in global environment issues for long time, we have been doing research in wooden architecture which takes advantage for environmental symbiosis, and also putting effort into design of large-scale wooden public facilities such as “Ueda Municipal Country Culture House“ in Ueda City, Nagano Prefecture (awarded Japan Federation of Architects and Building Engineers Associations Award ), “Gifu Academy of Forest Science and Culture” (awarded Public Architecture Award, First Prize of Innovative Architecture International Award in Italy, ARCASIA Award Gold Medal, Gengo Matsui Award, Eco-Build Award, Building Contractors Society Award, Architectural Institute of Japan Award, Canada Green Design Award, and Central District Architectural Award), and “Kino-Kuni Site Sight Information Pavilion” (a facility for expansion of timber demand in Yamanashi Prefecture awarded Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Award).

“Shiranui Library and Art Museum” in Uki-City in Kumamoto Prefecture, which is known for its record in the Nihon-shoki (the oldest chronicles of Japan), is designed as a unique complex facility that aims to create a synergy between libraries and art museums in a single building.

“Sasebo Shinminato Liner Terminal” (completed in December 2003) was selected as First prize among 454 applicants in the open design competition. The architecture shows its strong concept in a lawn hill roof used as a public open space.

At the same time, as Atsushi Kitagawara had an intention to engage in creation with a wider perspective, he worked on interior design, furniture, product design, and art direction for displays and exhibitions. His work has been publish in European and American specialized design magazines.

We were in charge of the stage design for “One of a Kind” presented by the world’s most famous modern ballet, The Netherlands Dance Theater (NDT, the Netherlands, with artistic direction by Jiri Kylian). “One of a Kind” was performed at the Paris Opera House, New York Lincoln Center, and other main theaters in the world. Many of European medias responded and reported extensively that a Japanese architect was elected for an Italian public spa project.

Nakamura Keith Haring Collection Art Museum, which was designed in 2007, became remarked as the first private museum in the world to exhibit exclusively a Keith Haring’s collection. We received with this museum the Murano Togo Prize and the AIA Japan Professional Honor Award in 2008, the JIA Grand Prix in 2009, and the Japan Art Academy Prize in 2010. In 2014, we launched the “Kobuchizawa Art Village Environment Improvement Project” to design the whole site as an art village centering on the museum, and under this project, “VILLA KEYFOREST”, “HOTEL KEYFOREST HOKUTO”, ” Extension and Renovation for Nakamura Keith Haring Collection Art Museum ” were developed. The series of buildings have been awarded with the Yamanashi Cultural Prize of Architecture for their wonderful harmony between the rich nature and the artifacts.

Furthermore, we produced “The Monument for the 50th Anniversary of Minami Alps National Park” also in Hokuto-City, Yamanashi Prefecture in 2014. In the same year, we participated in the international luxury fair of watches and jewelry “Baselworld 2014” held in Basel, Switzerland, to work on the renewal design of the exhibition booth of Mikimoto, a long-established brand of pearl stores.

Atsushi Kitagawara was the architectural producer of the Japanese Pavilion at EXPO MILANO 2015, and devised a three-dimensional wooden lattice structure making use of the Japanese traditional wood construction. Part of the pavilion was restored in 2017 and became part of the permanent collection in Arte Sella situated in northern Italy.

“Nakanishi RD1” is the new headquarters and R&D center of Nakanishi Inc., which has the No.1 share of dental and medical hand pieces in the world under the name of NSK brand. With the environment and the space provided to contribute to the world’s most advanced research and development. The architecture consists of a dynamic quad-layered light well called “Center Court” becoming the communication core area. In 2018, we also designed the company’s flagship factory “Nakanishi A1”.

For the reconstruction project of Toshima Gakuin Senior High School and Showa Tetsudo Senior High School ( Premium award of Japan Institute of Architects, 2005) situated in dense area of Ikebukuro at the heart of Tokyo, we proposed to rebuild the program minimizing the inconveniences for students and neighbors. We realized a comfortable and functional campus with various ideas, and creating a new campus identity appropriate for the coming era. As a result, the number of students has increased dramatically, and the improvement of academic ability has achieved remarkable success.

We were nominated as a finalist of many important national competitions with Japanese top architects. For example, the Yokosuka City Museum cmpetition noted by its original selection method for judging the qualities of architects and competed against Tadao Ando and Riken Yamamoto. Also finalist of the Suginami Arts Center Design Proposal in 2005, in which a similar selection method was adopted, where Toyo Ito, Mitsuru Senda and Atsushi Kitakawara were selected. When the Cabinet Office organized an open design proposal for the Akasaka Guest House Japanese-style Facility in 2006, we have also been selected as finalist.
