佐世保新みなとターミナル / Sasebo Shinminato Liner Terminal

交通施設として、人が待ったり通過してゆくこの建築は、芝生の丘をその目印としていますが、遠方からは丘を立ち上げているパッチワーク柄の外壁が目に入ってきます。丘を上がって行くと軍港が見えてきますが、その向こうには長閑な佇まいの赤崎岳を望むことが出来ます。そして赤崎岳の背後には九十九島の海が広がっています。丘の西側は階段で歩道に降りるようになっていますが、その立面からは階段の上に丘があるとは想像出来ないでしょう。船に乗降する人たちの待合ロビーは白い薄い屋根の下にあります。白い一枚のプレートだけが空中に浮かんでいて、その下を人々が行き交うイメージを演出しています。

The passenger boat terminal is situated at Sasebo-city, Nagasaki Prefecture. It is composed of a waiting place with a grass hill. The hill functions as a sign of this facility, which is not, though, clearly seen at eye-level: it is an outer wall with patchwork pattern that raises up the hill and appears firstly. Climbing up there, you can see a naval port and, behind it, Mt. Akasaki-dake which gives a peaceful atmosphere over there. Beyond the mountain stretches the scenic view of the sea and Kujuku-shima Islands. A staircase set on the west side of the hill leads to a sidewalk down there. The hill may seem to be so unexpected a feature as to be encountered at the top of the staircase. Under the white fine roof, the waiting lobby accommodates passengers of liners. The edge of the roof is sharpened with the concept of a white plate floating in the air under which people come and go.
